Checklist & Useful Tips

Preparation and the correct packing of your items for storage will assist in your items remaining in good condition. We’ve put together a handy moving and preparation checklist for anyone interested in utilising our storage facilities in Port Lincoln SAKwinana WA and Alice Springs NT.

  • Select the personal items you want to store – ask yourself, ‘Do I need to store this item?’ before putting it in storage. Remember, the more you store, the larger the storage unit you will need. If it’s sentimental, useful or has value to you, then store it.

  • Clean & vacuum belongings – before you pack anything, ensure it is clean – this is critical. There’s nothing worse than taking things out of storage months later to discover things have gotten musty and mouldy due to dust and dirt on furniture or other items. This is critical for appliances; ensure they are completely clean so there are no crumbs or food matter left on them that can get mouldy. Wrapping them in bubble wrap also gives them protection.

  • Create an inventory list & label the boxes – you can easily forget what items you’ve placed in each box, so as you pack a box, number it and write down the items on the box as well as on your inventory list. Keep a copy of the inventory list with you, as well as one in your storage shed; it can make things easier.

  • Clear plastic boxes vs boxes – another way to help find your items is to also place items in clear plastic boxes, which can make it easier to see what’s inside.
  • Protect items from outside conditions – not all storage sheds are climate controlled, so you can minimise any damage to your belongings due to variances in temperature by ensuring: all items are dry before storing them – apply protective sprays on your furniture and leather goods – seal boxes to keep moisture out – seal appliances and cords in plastic bags – clothing should be packed in special boxes specifically for garments – mattresses should be store in special mattress storage bags – and furniture covered in cotton sheets to prevent dust and damage.

  • Disassemble large items – you can save space by dismantling bed frames and other pieces of large furniture.

  • Plan where you place your items in the storage shed – place all large, heavy items on the bottom. Are there items you will need frequently? Place them near the door or on top so you can access them easily.

  • Other considerations – use good quality packing supplies - keep the keys to your padlock somewhere where you won’t lose them - do not give your access code to anyone.
